Kingsmen Edge Patriots by 11 Runs at Warner Park

Saim Ayub’s century sets up a close contest as the Patriots fall short despite a spirited chase

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots came within touching distance of a successful chase at Warner Park, but Jamaica Kingsmen held on for an 11-run victory after an absorbing contest. Chasing 183, the Patriots finished on 171 for 6 from their 20 overs, with the result going down to the final stages.

Patriots Make Early Inroads

After winning the toss and opting to bowl, the Patriots made an immediate impact. Naseem Shah struck twice inside the opening three overs, removing Keacy Carty for a first-ball duck before dismissing Muhammad Sadaqat for 2.

The early breakthroughs put Jamaica on the back foot, but Saim Ayub responded with a commanding innings. As the Patriots looked to contain the scoring, Ayub continued to find boundaries and eventually brought up a century from 58 balls.

The Patriots kept fighting back around him. Wanindu Hasaranga produced an excellent spell, claiming 2 for 18, while Obed McCoy also picked up two wickets. Hasaranga dismissed Kirk McKenzie and later Rovman Powell, while McCoy eventually removed Ayub for 102.

Despite Ayub’s century, the Patriots’ bowling unit kept picking up wickets at regular intervals and restricted Jamaica to 182 for 7.

Fletcher Leads the Chase

The Patriots began their response positively, with Andre Fletcher taking responsibility at the top of the order. He anchored the chase with an excellent 55 from 38 balls, keeping the required rate within reach.

The middle order continued to contribute, with Jason Holder making 34 and Dasun Shanaka adding a quick 35. Their efforts ensured the Patriots remained in the contest deep into the innings.

Patriots Push Until the End

With the target still within reach, St Kitts & Nevis continued to attack. The Patriots needed 12 runs from the final over, leaving themselves a genuine chance of completing the chase.

However, Jamaica managed to defend the total and restrict the Patriots to 171 for 6, securing an 11-run victory.

Plenty to Build On

The result did not go the Patriots’ way, but there were encouraging signs throughout the contest. Naseem Shah’s early breakthroughs, Hasaranga’s outstanding 2 for 18, and a determined batting effort led by Fletcher kept the Patriots competitive against a total built around a century.

Falling just 11 runs short after taking the game deep into the final over underlines how closely fought the contest was.
